Intern Spotlight: Shelby
Ever wonder what’s it like to be an intern at RD Thomas? It’s not just answering phones and ordering lunches (although that is part of the job)! We thought you might like to hear it directly from them, so today we’re starting off our Intern Spotlights with our most experienced intern, Shelby.
Texas Tech Advertising Student | Intern Since: February 2014
Shelby’s bubbly personality and ever-sunshiney demeanor quickly earned her the nickname “Pippa” around the office. She has a strong work ethic, is always on time with coffee in hand, takes notes before we even ask her to, and jumps right into our creative meetings with valuable suggestions. She has excelled in creating and managing social media content for our clients, so we’re trying to keep her around this office for as long as we can!
What’s a typical day like as an intern at RD Thomas?
You have to be alert for new projects that will take place throughout the day. I always start with a delicious cup of coffee on my desk, and listening to Ashleigh’s laugh echo in the halls.
How did you hear about this internship opportunity and what steps did you take to get here?
I heard about the social media internship opportunity from my friend Brittney, who previously interned at the office and just recently became the Account Coordinator. The second I heard interviews were taking place, I sent my information in and was able to schedule an interview.
What’s the greatest lesson you’ve learned at RD Thomas?
To be confident in your work and to surround yourself with great personalities and hard workers. That’s what creates the best work environment. RDT really has allowed me to see how every part comes together to have a successful advertising campaign.
What is the strangest assignment you’ve been given so far?
I was a mystery shopper at engagement ring stores in Lubbock, it was strange but also fun!
What is the most fun assignment you’ve been given so far?
I helped to plan and organize the “In The Pink” party for Susan G. Komen for the Cure! It was a fundraising event with a carnival theme, so I helped manage the carnival games, ticketing, and drink stations.
What do you do for creative inspiration?
Look on Pinterest and listen to music.
Pandora or Spotify?
Spotify all the way! I’ve been able to get people to buy it on the spot after showing them all the greatness it offers. ($5 a month for students…just saying.)
And who are you listening to right now on Spotify?
Who would you let punch you directly in the face?
Matthew McConaughey or Bradley Cooper because they know how to throw fake punches.
What was/is your favorite class at Texas Tech?
Photography 3310 with Jerod Foster. I got a camera for Christmas before taking that class, so I enjoyed learning about all the features of my new camera.
Which class has proven to be most beneficial in regards to your internship responsibilities?
Which advertising project are you most proud of? Either from class or from this internship.
My Anderson Bros. Jewelers campaign proposal I created and presented for RD Thomas. I wrote a script and created a storyboard for a TV spot, and also planned an event that would take place at the store.
What are you secretly good at?
I am a good beginner in learning how to shoot my compound bow. Watch out, Katniss!
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
What was the last movie you watched?
What was the last picture you took on your phone?
My puppy, Stetson, looking like an old man.
